Billing and credits

Hiroi is paid for with credits, not a subscription. You buy a balance, and every message, minute of voice, text and email draws it down. This page covers what things cost, how to top up, and how to read the Billing page.

Billing is not in the sidebar. Open it from the credit chip in the top bar, from 30-day credits on the dashboard, or by going to /billing directly.

The Billing page: a Paid status bar, three stat cards for balance, total spent and this month, the "What do credits buy?" panel, auto top-up settings and payment history

How paying works

  • 1 credit lists at 1 cent when you buy a custom amount. Larger packs cost less per credit, and a beta discount currently takes 20% off every purchase.
  • New accounts start with 50 credits so you can try the product before paying.
  • There are no plans, no monthly fee and nothing to cancel.
  • When your balance reaches zero your assistants stop replying until you add more.

Free and paid

The bar under the page title shows a Free or Paid badge.

You become Paid the moment you complete a credit purchase through checkout, and you stay paid permanently. Spending the balance back down to zero does not take the features away again.

Free Paid
Assistants 1 20
Knowledge base No 20 documents per assistant
Text and voice chat Yes Yes
Voice provider Azure only Your choice, including a custom endpoint
Session Signed widget authentication No Yes
Hide the "Powered by" badge No Yes

While you are on Free the bar reads 1 assistant · text & voice chat · add credits to unlock up to 20 assistants, integrations & more and carries an Add credits to unlock button. Once you are paid it reads All features unlocked · up to 20 assistants and the button becomes Manage billing, which opens the Stripe billing portal where you can manage cards and download invoices.

The stat row

Three cards sit under the status bar.

Card What it shows
Current balance Credits available right now. The line underneath converts that into a rough number of voice minutes (paid) or chat messages (free)
Total spent The total you have paid for credits, across every purchase
This month Credits consumed since the 1st on model, speech and voice-cloning usage, with the estimated underlying cost in dollars

This month also shows a percentage when this month's cost differs from last month's by at least 1% and both months had spend — an up arrow means you are spending more than you were.

What credits cost

The What do credits buy? panel on the page expands to a short summary. The exact rates are:

Item Credits
Chat and voice model usage 1 per 1,000 tokens, multiplied by a per-model factor, minimum 1
Text to speech 6 per 1,000 characters
Text to speech, Azure HD voice 9 per 1,000 characters
Text to speech, ElevenLabs voice 35 per 1,000 characters
Speech to text 2 per request

Notes on how those add up:

  • The per-model factor means a small fast model costs a fraction of a credit-per-thousand-tokens and a large model costs several times more. On the default model a typical text chat message works out at roughly 3 credits; a spoken widget turn is roughly 7 (speech to text, the model, then text to speech) — the figures the in-app panel quotes.
  • Voice in the widget is not metered by time. It bills per turn through the speech-to-text, model and text-to-speech rows above, so a spoken conversation costs the same whether the visitor pauses between turns or not.
  • The 6-credit speech rate is the Azure standard voices, which is what every assistant uses by default. Azure's HD voices cost 9 per 1,000 characters, and picking an ElevenLabs voice on the Voice tab costs 35 per 1,000 characters instead — roughly six times the standard rate per spoken reply.

Credit costs are the same whether an assistant is on your website or in Teams.

Note

The What do credits buy? panel lists exactly the rates this deployment can charge you. A self-hosted deployment that also runs telephony and email adds per-minute call, per-segment SMS, per-message email and monthly phone-number rates to that list; hiroi.ai does not.

Buying credits

Click Buy credits (Add credits if you have never paid) at the top right. The dialog offers five packs and a custom amount.

A beta discount takes 20% off every credit purchase while it lasts. The dialog says so at the top — a Beta badge reading 20% off all credits — limited-time launch pricing — and each tile strikes through its list price and shows the discounted one. The discount is applied to the actual charge on the server, so the price you see is the price Stripe takes.

Pack List price Beta price Per credit
500 credits $4.99 $3.99 0.8¢
1,000 credits $8.99 $7.19 0.72¢
2,500 credits $19.99 $15.99 0.64¢
5,000 credits $34.99 $27.99 0.56¢
10,000 credits $59.99 $47.99 0.48¢

The largest pack carries a Best value badge. Each tile also estimates what the pack buys in chat messages and voice minutes.

The Custom tile lists at 1.0¢ per credit, so 0.8¢ with the beta discount. Enter any amount up to 50,000 credits, in steps of 50; the dialog shows the dollar total next to the field. The practical floor is 100 credits, because Stripe will not charge less than $0.50 — below that the field reads Minimum $0.50 — add a few more credits and the purchase button stays disabled.

Pick a tile, then click the purchase button — it reads Purchase 2,500 credits · $15.99 — and you are handed to Stripe Checkout. Credits land on your balance as soon as the payment clears, and you come back to the Billing page. If checkout fails to start, the button holds for a few seconds before you can retry, and the wait gets longer with each consecutive failure.

You can move between the tiles with the arrow keys and select one with Space or Enter.

A portion of every purchase goes to carbon removal via Stripe Climate.

Note

If the dialog says Payment system not configured, this deployment has no payment provider set up. That is expected on self-hosted enterprise installations, which track usage without charging credits.

Note

The discount is one number, BETA_CREDIT_DISCOUNT_PCT in app/config.py, and it drives the banner, the tile prices and the charge alike. A self-hosted deployment can change it, or set it to 0 to sell at list price with no banner.

Auto top-up

Auto top-up buys more credits automatically when your balance runs low, so a busy day does not take your assistants offline.

It needs a saved card. Cards are added in the Stripe billing portal — click Manage billing in the status bar — and then appear under Payment methods with their brand, last four digits and expiry. Remove detaches a card from your account.

To turn it on:

  1. Switch on Enable auto top-up.
  2. Set When balance drops below — the credit level that triggers a charge. Anything from 0 to 1,000; the default is 20.
  3. Set Top up with — how many credits to buy each time. From 50 to 50,000 in steps of 50; the default is 500. The dollar equivalent is shown beside the field.
  4. Choose a card under Charge to.
  5. Click Save settings.

Saving without a card selected is refused with Auto top-up requires a saved payment method.

Two things switch auto top-up off on their own:

  • A declined card. The charge is not retried; top up manually and re-enable it.
  • Removing the card it charges. Deleting that payment method clears the setting.

Auto top-up charges land on your credit balance, but they are not listed in payment history. The receipts for them are in the Stripe billing portal, behind Manage billing.

Payment history

Every purchase is listed newest first, with the date, its type, the credits added and the amount charged.

Type Meaning
Card payment A checkout confirmed by Stripe's webhook — the normal case
Success_page A checkout credited when you landed back on the Billing page before the webhook arrived
Subscription_grant Credits granted by a subscription
Refund Credits removed after a refund

Eight rows are shown at a time; Show more expands the list, which holds your 50 most recent entries. The footer totals the credits you have purchased.

Invoices and receipts live in the Stripe billing portal, behind Manage billing.

Where the spend comes from

To see which assistants are consuming credits, open Analytics and pick the Usage & Cost tab, which lists conversations, tokens and credits spent per assistant. The dashboard's Credits today card and the 30-day credits figure on its Channels card are the same spend seen over shorter windows.
